Robert Simpson, founder and owner of Fife Fruits.
We are a family owned and run business….and our people are treated like family.
Every year we employ around 100 seasonal staff who come from across the world to enjoy the benefits of working for one of Scotland’s best fruit farms, with many of those returning year after year - some have even been promoted within the business because we recognise and reward hard work.
Employment usually starts from May and lasts until October, depending on the weather and growth rates. As the work is manual and field based, you will need to be fit and healthy. Jobs can range from constructing tunnels and irrigation, to working in the pack house, quality control and even some supervisory roles, but most will involve picking fruit from table tops or ground-level soil grown crops.
As is common in the fruit industry, the majority of picking work is paid on a “piecework” basis. This means staff are paid based on the amount of fruit picked rather than by the hour. The advantage of this system is that the more you pick the more you earn, so your hard work is well rewarded with potential high earnings. However we also monitor individual production daily to ensure everyone earns the recognised national minimum wage in Scotland. We normally work 6 days a week in Summer, with a day off on Sunday, however that can vary depending on the weather, the stage of the crop and the time of the season.
Tarvit Farm is located only one hour from the international airport of Edinburgh, and there is very easy access to all major cities and attractions across Scotland, all of which are are well serviced by public transport from Cupar (a 10 minute walk from the farm).
We provide accommodation in the form of large, modern static caravans on site, each equipped with shower, toilet, kitchen and bedrooms. We make every effort to keep families and friends together, and also those that speak the same language. Although we are a multi lingual operation, it will help if you can understand basic English, but it’s certainly not essential. There is a communal kitchen and laundry on the farm, and there is free WiFi to help keep you connected to family and friends back home.
Other facilities include an onsite gym, pool table, darts and table tennis table, and there are regular parties held at weekends on the farm, with a very welcome highlight of the year being the annual staff BBQ.
